Progression and the game purchase are separate
Diablo IV supports cross-play and cross-progression, but that does not make every platform purchase interchangeable. Blizzard’s Steam announcement says players who want that version need to purchase it on Steam and connect it to a Battle.net account.
So a Battle.net copy is not simply an activation key for Steam. Start with the platform you want to launch from, then check which account and product you need.
What Steam adds to the setup
Blizzard describes Steam-specific features such as Steam achievements, its friends list and invitations. The Steam version still connects to Battle.net; it does not remove that account from the process.
Use the intended Battle.net account when connecting. If you are expecting familiar progress, an unrelated Battle.net login is not the same profile just because the game is being launched through Steam.
Check expansions on the platform you will use
The current Steam page for Lord of Hatred explicitly requires the Diablo IV base game on Steam. It also says Lord of Hatred includes Vessel of Hatred. Read that package wording before buying an expansion or assuming the base game includes everything.
Do not assume that linking accounts grants an unlisted expansion license. Check the current platform package and the account’s actual included edition. A patch containing expansion files is not the same thing as permission to play that expansion’s campaign.
| Check | Question |
|---|---|
| Launcher | Will you use Steam or Battle.net? |
| Base game | Is the required platform copy included? |
| Expansion | Does the offer name the expansion or collection you want? |
| Progress | Are you connecting the Battle.net profile you intend to use? |
Think about your friends and your existing library
If your main goal is playing with friends, cross-play is the feature to inspect; everyone does not need to buy through the same storefront just for that reason. If you prefer keeping games and achievements in Steam, its version may fit how you use your library.
Choose around the library and setup you prefer, then compare the current edition and price. Someone who values Steam achievements may make a different choice from someone already launching their other Blizzard games through Battle.net.
Use the account description, not the artwork
An account that names Diablo IV has not automatically confirmed every expansion or character. The edition guide explains the current bundles; the Seasonal/Eternal guide helps if you have a particular character or activity in mind.
The searches below look through account titles and details. Open a result to check its games and edition rather than treating the search phrase as a guarantee.
